It’s hard to predict the direction that technology will take, but it seems that artificial intelligence and robotics are very promising fields. The urge to create that exists in every human being pushes us to invent new tools and improve existing ones. For the last few decades, scientists have been developing artificial intelligence methods that solve problems in a way similar to intelligent human activity. The results of their work are used in virtually every area of life.

Trends in artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence methods arise mainly in two ways: there are algorithms modeled on the workings of nature, such as artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, and methods arising from the development of formal concepts, such as fuzzy logic. All these tools open up a wide range of new possibilities for computers.

The main methods of artificial intelligence

Neural networks are simplified mathematical models of human brain activity, which, when programmed in a computer, can be used to recognize images, classify data or predict successive values in a sequence of numbers. Their characteristic feature is the ability to learn from the data provided. Genetic algorithms base their operation on the analogy between the representation of data in a computer using strings of zeros and ones and the sequence of genes in chromosomes. Instead of mathematical optimization methods, they use crossover and mutation on the strings of ones and zeros, leading to the creation of new data that are potentially better solutions to the given problem. Fuzzy logic provides a mathematical apparatus for handling fuzzy natural language concepts such as a tall person. It thus allows to create programs that better understand the typical human way of looking at data.

The set of these tools already allows to create IT solutions that were impossible a dozen or so years ago, and with the increase of computing power and possibilities provided by clouds, we can expect more fascinating solutions.
